About the Tannery
Ever since its founding in 1927 by Mr and Mrs Rémy Carriat, the Tannery has been specializing in the creation of exquisite full-grain and Nubuck leathers for the luxury market. Now in its third generation, leather has become a family passion: “Every fat wrinkle, shade and crease of the leather is an unforgettable guarantee of authenticity and proof of a natural material which has grown and developed over time”, Jacques, current owner of the Tannery, told us proudly. To ensure utmost quality, only the finest European hides are selected for production. With the great French tanning tradition at heart, the hides are mineral tanned, vegetably re-tanned, and enriched with specialized dyes to render the leathers exceptionally strong, beautifully supple, and colour-vibrant.
Wie wir die Manufaktur gefunden haben
In jeder Branche hört man am meisten von den Branchenführern. Der Name Rémy Carriat tauchte immer wieder auf. Unser Interesse war geweckt und wir mussten uns selbst ein Bild machen. Über einen Freund von uns kamen wir mit den sympathischen Agenten Aurélie und Cedric in Kontakt und arrangierten ein Treffen. Wir wurden definitiv nicht enttäuscht. Die Gerberei befindet sich in der wunderschönen Region Espelette, einer malerischen Gegend, eingebettet in die üppigen grünen Hügel des Mondarrain-Berges. Innen wie außen ist Rémy Carriat wahrscheinlich die sauberste und schönste Gerberei, die wir je gesehen haben. Die Gerberei nimmt einen besonderen Platz in unserem Herzen ein, da sie die erste Gerberei ist, mit der wir je zusammengearbeitet haben.
Nachhaltigkeit
Eine nachhaltige Produktion, die lokale Landschaft und die Umwelt als Ganzes respektiert, ist ein integraler Bestandteil der Gerberei. Um dies zu erreichen, verfügt die Gerberei über eine vollständige vorbiologische und chemische Behandlungsstation, die das Abfallaufkommen drastisch reduziert. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit Espelette Village leitet Rémy Carriat ihre Abwässer in die kommunale biologische Kläranlage ab und entwickelt ständig neue und sauberere Produktionsverfahren, die der strengen europäischen REACH-Richtlinie entsprechen.
Which leather we use
We use their famous Pebble and Nubuck leathers for several of our belts. Both leathers are created of waste products of the meat industry, mineral-tanned, and exceptionally strong. Currently, xx of our products are crafted of their leathers.
The pebble leather is a full-grain that is semi-aniline, drummed and glossy mat offering a beautifully natural look and incredibly rich touch. The Nubuck leather with a lightly buffed velvety grain is 3M treated, making it both water and oil resistant and nearly impervious to stains.

The work that goes into this leather
Leather is one of the oldest materials ever used by humans with historical records dating back many thousands of years. Even nowadays with modern technology, creating premium leathers is a complex and lengthy process. All of our raw hides are side-products of the meat and hunting industry. They are all tanned in Europe by some of the most prestigious tanneries in the world in compliance with the strict REACH Regulation to ensure a clean and sustainable production. The proud results are gorgeous leathers which will withstand the test of time and only become more beautiful with use.
